LITURGIES

Kristallnacht Liturgy and Sermon, November 7, 2012, prepared by Rev. Dr. Katie Day

 * This liturgy was created by Rev. Dr. Katie Day and with the presence and singing of rabbi Liz Bolton and the choir from Mishkan Shalom Synagogue. Kristallnacht , also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass, was a pogrom or series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on 9–10 November 1938, carried out by SA paramilitary and civilians. German authorities looked on without intervening. The attacks left the streets covered with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues. At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and a further…

Ecumenical Worship – Faith and Politics in the Public Square

Setting: music goes on in a public square with several people talking. One person is calling people attention to the poor. Another person comes takes him down and starts to talk about liberty and individual rights over social commitments. He stands in a box and bashes the poor. All: And also with you.   One: Speak up brothers and sisters! All: We are here to declare that God is…

This year’s worship service focuses specifically upon…

Hymn for Black Friday, By David Gambrell

Hymn for Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving, the first day of Christmas shopping) to the tune Mendelssohn (“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”) (1) Early on a Friday morn, anxious drivers blow their horns. Swiftly to the mall they race, praying for a parking place. Humming carols of the season, spending with no rhyme or reason. Checking, savings overdrawn, all before the light of dawn. Save a dollar! Save a dime! Happy, happy shopping-time! (2) Bargain hunters stalk their prey all across the U.S.A. Checkout lines around the block, just like back at Plymouth Rock. Stuffed with turkey, pie, and…
