Words for Worship – Advent Candlelighting (Year B)
The lighting of the Advent Candles is an important Advent/Christmas tradition. This liturgy refers to Isaiah 9:2 – the New Revised Standard Version of the verse is quoted at the start of each litany. It also makes references to select RCL readings from each Sunday (all ”quotes” of scripture are taken or adapted from the NRSV). It is written as a litany, but it can easily be adapted to be presented by one voice.
1st Sunday of Advent
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined.
We join with sisters and brothers around the world, lighting candles to mark our steps in this Advent journey.
Today, we light the candle of Hope.
Even though the world seems dark and cold, we know that the light of Christ is coming. The face of our Lord will shine, and we shall be saved!
Testifying against all suffering and darkness, we kindle this light. Together, we proclaim to the world that, in Christ, we have hope.
2nd Sunday of Advent
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined.
The light grows gradually brighter as we move through Advent together.
The candle of Hope already burns bright. Today, we light the candle of Preparation.
The coming Christ desires us all to thrive, patiently wanting us to turn from the ways of sin and death. As we wait for the coming of the day of God, we want to be ready.
Seeking a straight path, we light this candle to guide our steps. Together, we prepare the way and strive to lead lives of holiness, goodness, and peace.
3rd Sunday of Advent
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined.
Week by week, the light grows stronger and brighter, as we anticipate the coming Christ.
The candles of Hope and Preparation are already ablaze. Today, we light the candle of Joy.
We excitedly anticipate the coming of the Mighty One. The promise of healing, comfort, liberty, and freedom is good news that is meant to be shared!
Rejoicing in the mercy and justice of our Lord, we kindle this flame. Together, we lift our hearts and voices in songs of joy.
4th Sunday of Advent
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined.
The lights that we have kindled each week light the way to the coming Christ.
The candles of Hope, Preparation, and Joy glow brilliantly. Today, we light the candle of Love.
The coming Lord is forever faithful. The never-ending affection and tenderness the Christ has for us is a gift that unequalled.
Praising the God who cares so deeply for all creation, we light this candle. Together, we will demonstrate and share the love of Christ.
Christmas Eve/Christmas Day
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
