Sermon – Theology and the Arts, LPTS
Today we are here to worship God with a larger community, a community that today includes the board of trustees who are an intrinsic part of this community but can only visit us once a semester. We always get excited with their presence with us. And for today, we thought we would worship God together using the arts throughout the worship as a tool to help us understand our faith, to understand our life and the world and give expression to that which we call God’s love and salvation. In order to worship God today, I invited several artists to help us think about and experience what the presence of God in our midst might be.

Dreaming, Being Puzzled led and Seeing God’s Glory
Glen Echo Presbyterian Church, Columbus, OH – October 03, 2010
Rev. Cláudio Carvalhaes
Bible Text: Acts 10:1-48
Good morning, may the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Let me start by saying how thankful I am to be here with you this morning. I am deeply thankful for your care and hospitality for allowing me to be here this morning and for the privilege to worship God with you. To reverend Lee and to you all, my deepest gratitude! I am honored to be here.
Today is world communion and as Christians we go against what the world spreads around: the world says “we should live by ourselves” but at this table we say “no! we can only live if we live together. The world says: “be suspicious of anyone” but at this table we learn to say no! trust those who come to eat and drink with us. The world says, “mind your own business, and survive yourself” but at this table we say no! and instead we claim that we are each other’s keepers and sustainers.
World Communion: Love Without Borders
a sermon preached at Independent Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, AL – September 27, 2009
Good morning. I want to thank Rev. Conrad Sharps and the Focus of Faith Committee for the invitation and thank you all for having me here today. Rev. Conrad is now leading the most important committee of the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, the presidential search committee. I am learning to admire Rev Conrad more as I see the wise way he is leading our school in this new search. I also want to thank Paul Ramjue, for such a good work during this process before my arrival and for my stay in Birmingham. Last night I had a great time with some of you, thank you for your hospitality. I learned quickly about the rivalry between Alabama and Alburn and I had people telling me to go for Alabama that I would be safe. However, I will be unashamedly political here and say that I haven’t decided between the two yet. Read the rest of this entry »

The Preaching of Joy – Festival of Homiletics, Nashville, TN 2010
The Preaching of Joy
This Festival of Preachers’ theme this year is The Joy of Preaching and I started to wonder about the word joy and what it might be all about… I started also to wonder how the joy of preaching, already assumed in the theme, is inextricably connected to the preaching of joy. There is no way of having joy to preach if we don’t know what the preaching of joy might mean. If that is so, how do we preach joy or about joy? How do we, bearers of this Christian joy, go about the preaching of joy? How do you preach joy in your congregation brother and sister? How do you correlate the joyful gospel of Jesus Christ with the life of your people and the life of the world? How do we intersect our world, our Christian faith and a Christian understanding of joy?
